Road closed from Abbeyleix to Portlaoise
Gardaí are at the scene tonight
THE entire route from Abbeyleix to Portlaoise has been closed tonight following a serious road incident.
The road will remain closed overnight while gardaí manage what they describe as ‘an ongoing incident’ on the N77 road between the two towns.
According to local sources, it is understood that a serious collision involving a motorcycle happened at about 8pm this evening.
Traffic detours have been set up and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
In an update shortly before 10.30pm, gardaí said: 'Abbeyleix gardaí are currently managing an ongoing incident in the Abbeyleix area. As a result, the N77 from Abbeyleix town to Junction 17 (Portlaoise) is closed and will remain closed overnight.
'Motorists are advised to follow diversion routes and avoid the area where possible.'
Gardaí added: 'We are appealing to anyone who travelled through Abbeyleix around 8pm this evening to contact Abbeyleix Garda Station on 057 867 4100.
'We are particularly interested in speaking with any witnesses and reviewing any relevant dashcam footage. Thank you for your cooperation.'
