Road closed in Portlaoise after emergency incident

A BUSY road in Portlaoise is closed to traffic this evening, while emergency works are carried out on a burst water main.
Traffic on the Dublin Road is being diverted at Portlaoise hospital and a detour is in place, with significant delays expected.
In a warning on social media at about 5.30pm, Laois gardaí said: ‘Following an incident in Portlaoise, Uisce Éireann/Irish Water mains repairs are currently underway on the Dublin Road in the town.
‘Traffic leaving Portlaoise on the Dublin Road is being diverted at the hospital. A detour is in place. Significant delays are expected.
‘Motorists are advised to please consider an alternative route, where possible.’
The burst main will affect water supply in Portlaoise and surrounding areas until later tonight.
Irish Water confirmed that repair works will continue until 10pm tonight.
Residents may experience reduced water pressure or temporary outages during this period. Customers are advised to allow 3-4 hours after repairs for full supply restoration.
The company said that crews on site are working to resolve the issue ‘as quickly and safely as possible’.
