SINGER/SONGWRITER Joseph Gorman recently launched his debut album in front of a packed house at Mountmellick Arts Centre.

Joseph was supported on the night by musicians Joe Byrne and Enda Byrne, chart-topping folk singer Emer Dunne from Mountmellick and by the Timahoe Men’s Choir.

The culmination of five years’ work, the album, titled The Modern Irish Ballad, showcases a contemporary interpretation of traditional Irish folk music.

The CD features songs blending rich storytelling, evocative melodies and a deep connection with Irish cultural heritage. The 14 tracks include timeless Irish ballads like Four Green Fields, Come my little son and Faraway in Australia alongside original contemporary folk songs such as Geneva, Can I see your passport? and When Minella won the double.

It also tells stories of the lived Irish experience in recent times, including the cost-of-living crisis, moving to Australia, Covid, rural isolation, humorous come-all-ye songs and recent sporting events.

The album is currently available for streaming on all major online platforms.
