Portlaoise Court: Judge accepts jurisdiction in stabbing case
Portlaoise Courthouse
A WOMAN was before Portlaoise District Court last week accused of stabbing a man with a peeling knife.
Christine Moore (40), St Evin’s Park, Monasterevin, Co Kildare was charged with the possession of a peeling knife and with assault causing harm on 12 August last year at Ardevan Grove, Monasterevin.
Court presenter Garda Sgt Kirby said the director of public prosecutions (DPP) had directed the case be heard in the district court.
Judge Andrew Cody asked Sgt Kirby to outline the alleged facts in the case.
Sgt Kirby said that the injured party allegedly received “a stab wound to the lower part of his stomach. A 5cm deep stab wound.” Judge Cody said: “A 5cm stab wound and the DPP decides it’s a minor offence (district court level)?” Sgt Kirby said: “It is alleged that the injured party fell onto the knife that was allegedly in Ms Moore’s hand.” After reading a file on the matter, Judge Cody said he was accepting jurisdiction and would hear it at district court level.
He went on to remand Ms Moore on continuing bail to the 14 September sitting of the court, where the defendant can either enter a guilty plea or in the event she pleads not guilty, he set a provisional hearing date for the case to be heard on 13 October.
