A SKODA driver was arrested and got a sleigh ride from gardaí at a checkpoint in Portlaoise last night.

The culprit was top of the naughty list, after giving false details at a mandatory intoxicant testing (MIT) checkpoint.

After members of the Laois Roads Policing Unit (RPU) established the driver’s identity, it emerged that he was disqualified and had a learner permit that expired in 2023.

Posting a photo from the scene on social media today, gardaí said: ‘Santa called. You’re on the naughty list.

‘Laois RPU conducting a MIT checkpoint last night in Portlaoise stopped this Skoda, while testing motorists for alcohol and drugs as part of the Christmas road safety campaign.

‘Unfortunately for this driver, Santa wasn’t the only one checking lists. Here’s how the night went:

*Expired learner permit since 2023.

*Gives gardaí false details.

*Currently disqualified from driving.’

Gardaí added: ‘Turns out this wasn’t a case of “just one small mistake”. This was a full festive bundle of bad decisions.’

The driver was arrested at the scene and has been charged to appear at Portlaoise District Court.

Gardaí confirmed that the car was seized and ‘given a sleigh ride to the impound yard’, with all excuses rejected by Santa.
