St Mary's CBS celebrates awards night
The Meitheal 2026 team
ST MARY’S CBS Portlaoise celebrated another outstanding year of achievement and success at its annual awards night.
Students, families, teachers and staff gathered for the 2026 ceremony to recognise excellence across all aspects of school life.
The event on 11 May provided an opportunity to honour the achievements of students both inside and outside the classroom, with awards presented for academic excellence, leadership, creativity, sport and contribution to the wider school community.
A particular focus of the evening was the recognition of sixth year students, who were presented with prestigious Student of the Year awards along with ‘From Each Their Best’ awards across all subject areas, in acknowledgement of their dedication and commitment throughout their time in the CBS.
Sporting success featured prominently following another exceptional year for the school across a number of disciplines, including hurling, football, soccer, rugby, volleyball and basketball.
Special praise was reserved for the school’s basketball programme, which continued its remarkable rise with the U19 team capturing the All-Ireland A League title this season, building on last year’s historic All-Ireland Cup success.
There was also provincial success at underage level, with both the first year and second year teams claiming Leinster titles.
The evening also highlighted achievements beyond sport and academics, with students recognised for their involvement in Young Scientist, debating, Student Enterprise, leadership and extra-curricular activities.
Among those honoured was Joshua Corbett, who was named overall winner in the Stripe Young Scientist Competition, while Paddy Lynch and Tom McDonald were congratulated after winning their junior category at the National Student Enterprise Awards.
Students and guests also heard from distinguished past-pupil Roger Young and Portlaoise-based Garda Ronan Maher, captain of the Tipperary senior hurling team.
Both speakers encouraged students to embrace opportunities, work hard and make the most of the opportunities available to them beyond school life.
The evening concluded with the presentation of the school’s top honours.
Max Gibney received the Tom Tarrant Student of the Year Award, while Cormac Deegan was presented with the Martin Conroy Award.
Luke Dunne earned the From Each Their Best Award and Cian Butler was named Sports Person of the Year.
The ceremony served as a fitting celebration of the talent, dedication and school spirit that continues to thrive throughout St Mary’s CBS.
