Suicide prevention group opens a new drop-in centre in Portlaoise

The SOSAD drop-in centre has fulfilled a major aim of the suicide prevention charity
A DROP-IN centre for anyone struggling with their mental health has officially opened in Portlaoise.
The centre run by suicide prevention charity SOSAD (Save Our Sons and Daughters) has opened its doors in the group’s premises at Shamrock House on the Abbeyleix road, where anyone can call in without a prior appointment.

Cllr Marie Tuohy cut the red ribbon to declare the centre officially open on Wednesday 11 September, when she was joined by supporters, guests and SOSAD committee members who included Portlaoise mental health advocate Christy Bannon, so was a main driver in bringing SOSAD to Laois more than two years ago.

The group said on social media: ‘Fabulous refreshments were enjoyed and truly powerful and inspiring conversations were had on the importance of prevention, community and mental health. The drop-in centre will allow anyone the space to arrive at our door and be met with a cup of tea and a chat, without any appointment needed. This would not be possible without the continued support from the community.’

With six other centres across Ireland, the organisation’s motto is ‘Suicide prevention through early intervention’. There is a 24/7 freephone helpline on 1800 901 909.

A non-profit organisation, SOSAD Ireland provides free professional counselling to people who are suffering with suicidal ideation, self-harming, depression, stress and anxiety or who simply need to talk. More information is available at https://sosadireland.ie/
