A SUSPECT has been arrested following a burglary at a house in Rathdowney, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The young man is also suspected of interfering with a number of vehicles in the Ballybrittas area.

Laois gardaí confirmed this afternoon that an individual has been arrested in connection with the incidents.

They said: ‘Portlaoise gardaí have made an arrest following reports of a burglary in Rathdowney and a number of vehicle interference incidents in Ballybrittas, on Sunday 18 January.

‘Following Garda enquiries, an individual has been arrested detained and charged with a number of offences. The individual is currently before the courts in relation to these matters, as well as offences in neighbouring areas.’

Gardaí pointed out that the vehicles targeted were unlocked, as they appealed to people not to leave valuables on display and to ensure vehicles are secured.

In a warning on social media, Laois Offaly gardaí said: ‘It is important to highlight that the vehicles targeted during these incidents were left unsecured. Gardaí are reminding the public to lock vehicles at all times, remove property and avoid leaving valuables on display, even for short periods.

‘Simple preventative steps reduce opportunity and remain one of the most effective ways of preventing this type of crime.’
