A FEMALE staff member required hospital treatment after a ‘distressing and violent’ incident at a Laois leisure centre yesterday evening.

It was confirmed today that the woman attended the emergency department at Portlaoise hospital and is recovering from her ordeal, following the violent brawl between two groups of customers at the centre.

Thanking everyone who offered support and assistance during the frightening incident, Laois Leisure Portarlington manager Seán Quirke said in a statement today: ‘There is an active Garda investigation into the incident for which a result will be pursued on behalf of our many fantastic customers, our team of staff and the protection of a safe environment for swimming in Portarlington since 1974.

‘I can confirm that, while not directly attacked, one of our team of staff was injured and is now recovering following attendance at Portlaoise A & E last night.

‘I would like to commend our staff for looking out for and moving other customers to safety during the incident and for their immediate call for Garda support, which arrived within a short time frame.’

Mr Quirke added: ‘Once again, thank you all for your support and we look forward to seeing you all using the facilities in the days ahead.’

It is understood that the staff member was injured when she was knocked over during the altercation, which broke out at about 6pm and forced the early closure of the centre.

Management took the decision to close, after what they described as ‘a distressing and violent situation’ on Tuesday 5 August.

Making the announcement on their social media platforms, they said a ‘serious incident of anti-social behaviour’ between customers resulted having to close early.

Gardaí were alerted but those involved had dispersed by the time they arrived.

The centre said yesterday: ‘Due to a serious incident of anti-social behaviour between customers, we will be closing early tonight following the Aquafit class at 7.45pm.

‘This decision has been made to allow our staff time to decompress after a distressing and violent situation.

‘We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and support.’

Gardaí are examining CCTV footage as they carry out enquiries and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The centre is open as normal today, while the investigation continues.
