GARDAÍ are investigating a violent incident that forced a Laois leisure centre to close early yesterday evening.

Management at Laois Leisure in Portarlington took the decision to close, after what they described as ‘a distressing and violent situation’ involving a group of customers.

Making the announcement on their social media platforms, they said a ‘serious incident of anti-social behaviour’ between customers resulted in having to close early.

Gardaí were alerted but those involved had dispersed by the time they arrived.

They are investigating the public order incident, which happened at about 6pm on Tuesday 5 August, and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Centre management said yesterday: ‘Due to a serious incident of anti-social behaviour between customers, we will be closing early tonight following the Aquafit class at 7.45pm.

‘This decision has been made to allow our staff time to decompress after a distressing and violent situation.

‘We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and support.’

One customer who was present commented: ‘It was shocking. It should never be repeated again.’

The centre is open as normal today, while gardaí continue to make enquiries.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Portlaoise Garda Station at 057 8674100.
