ANOTHER severe weather warning for Laois will come into effect at 8pm tonight, following a bitterly cold day across the county.
A Status Orange warning for low temperatures and ice will remain in place from 8pm on Tuesday 8 January until 10am on Wednesday 9 January.
Most schools in the county will remain closed again tomorrow and it is likely that it will be Monday before they finally reopen after the extended Christmas break. Parents will receive updates as usual from individual schools’ text groups.
In their latest update at 5pm today, Laois County Council’s Severe Weather Assessment Team said: ‘County Laois is the subject of an Orange Weather Warning for Low Temperature/Ice from 8pm this evening (Tuesday) until 10am tomorrow (Wednesday).
‘Severe frost, icy stretches and freezing fog are likely tonight and over the coming days.
‘Notwithstanding ongoing salting of rostered routes, motorists are urged to exercise caution on the road network, to slow down and to prioritise use of treated roads.
‘Hazards remain on the road network and those hazards may not be as visible as they were in recent days. Check fog lights and use them appropriately. Exercise patience and avoid overtaking.
Maps of salted routes are available on the council’s website at Laois.ie.
