PORTLAOISE AFC has launched a major community fundraising initiative as the club celebrates its 60th anniversary and marks the beginning of construction on a new full size astro pitch at Rossleighan Park.

The fundraiser will centre around a 12 hour football marathon on Saturday, May 9, with 33 teams taking part. Each team will raise funds for their own squad while also contributing to the club’s wider Development Fund, which is supporting completion of the new facility.

Ground has now officially been broken on the astro pitch, a project the club describes as a key investment to meet growing participation levels. Portlaoise AFC has seen significant growth in both juvenile and adult sections in recent years, increasing demand for year round access to modern playing and training facilities.

Club chairperson Karl Byrne said the scale of community engagement has been a major boost to the project.

“The response has been overwhelming,” Byrne said. “It really shows the pride people in Portlaoise have in the club. Players, parents, coaches, volunteers and supporters are all pulling together, which is especially meaningful in our 60th anniversary year.” A number of well known local sporting figures and former players are also expected to take part on the day, helping to promote the fundraiser and add to the sense of occasion.

The football marathon forms part of a broader Development Fund campaign, which also includes the production of a commemorative club booklet. The publication will feature messages and advertisements from local businesses and community members, with all proceeds going directly towards completion of the astro pitch.

Founded in 1966, Portlaoise AFC has grown steadily over six decades to become one of the largest football clubs in the county. Hundreds of players now represent the club each week, reflecting its deep roots within the local community.

Describing the astro pitch as a long term investment, Byrne said the project is about more than infrastructure.

“This pitch is about creating opportunities for young players, giving teams a reliable home throughout the year, and ensuring the club remains strong for the next 60 years,” he said.

The club has encouraged supporters and members of the public to attend the event on May 9 and to support the participating teams throughout the day.

Byrne also acknowledged the contribution of those who support the club’s fundraising efforts year round, including lotto players, volunteers, organisers and local supporters.

Further details on the fundraiser and information on how to support Portlaoise AFC’s Development Fund are available through the club’s social media channels.
