Presidential reception marks countdown to Fleadh in Belfast

A reception has been held by the President of Ireland to mark the countdown to the first Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann to take place in Belfast.

Stormont economy minister Caoimhe Archibald was among those who attended the event at Áras an Uachtaráin in Dublin on Monday along with key partners and stakeholders involved with delivering the event next month.

Belfast Fleadh is set to showcase music and dance from Ulster Scots, South Asian and other cultures, as part of the world’s largest celebration of traditional Irish music, song and dance.

It is expected to bring around 800,000 visitors to the Northern Ireland capital from August 2nd-9th for the landmark cultural celebration.

Archibald hailed an opportunity to boost tourism, support local businesses and showcase Belfast.

“I am proud that Belfast will host Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann next month and look forward to welcoming visitors from across Ireland and around the world,” she said.

“With more than 700,000 visitors expected, the Fleadh presents a major opportunity to boost tourism, support local businesses and showcase Belfast and the north on an international stage.

“The event will bring significant economic benefits while also creating a lasting legacy by encouraging greater participation in traditional music, culture, language and the arts.”

The minister added:  “I would like to thank Comhaltas, Belfast City Council, Ards CCE, Tourism NI, the many partner organisations, volunteers and local communities whose hard work and dedication have made this landmark event possible.”
