Serena Williams is set to partner Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open mixed doubles event after being handed a wildcard entry.

Alcaraz had confirmed on Thursday he was set to return to action at Flushing Meadows later this month after being out since April with an ongoing wrist issue.

Williams, 44, made her comeback after a four-year hiatus at Wimbledon in June, but suffered a knee injury before going on to play alongside sister Venus in the doubles at this week’s Cincinnati Open, where they lost in the first round on Monday.

A statement from the US Open on Saturday read: “Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz will form a superstar team at the 2026 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship, with the pair receiving a wild card into the event.”

In another marquee pairing, women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka is set to play alongside Novak Djokovic, while Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina partners Taylor Fritz and Iga Swiatek has teamed up with Casper Ruud.

Defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, who are doubles specialists, also received a wildcard into the main draw.

The mixed doubles event runs from August 24 to 26, with the other US Open competitions starting on August 30 through to September 13.
