St Abban's juveniles finish indoor season in style

The Girls U/14 Relay team who finished in third place

THE indoor season came to a close on Saturday in Athlone at Day 3 of the National Juvenile Indoor Championships. Well done to all our juveniles who were out competing.

The club had great success across the day with both Leo Smith and Lily O’Neill picking up individual medals. Leo finished joint second in the Boys U/12 High Jump. His clearance of 1.30m saw him and another athlete finish with the same record meaning they shared the silver medals.

Lily finished second in the Girls U/15 Triple Jump with a jump of 9.73m which interestingly was further than the previous championship record.

The Girls U/14 team of Roisin, Faye, Sinead and Sophie capped off the day with a fantastic bronze in the 4x200m relay.

There was a great selection of other athletes competing from the club across a wide range of events. In the relays the U/12 Girls finished in seventh place overall. The team of Penelope, Ava, Realtin and Meabh qualified through in second place and ran brilliantly in the final to finish in seventh. The U/15 Girls also qualified in second place from their heats but an infringement in the final saw them miss out.

The U/17 Mixed Relay team of Will, Eoghan, Karen and Elanna finished 5th in the heat of the U/17 Mixed Relay. Liam Doyle was also in action in the U/12 High Jump when his jump of 1.15m saw him finish in 14th place. Aoife Lawlor also cleared 1.30m in the U/13 High Jump which saw her finish in eighth.

Aaliyah Troy narrowly missed out on a medal when her new PB of 9.95m saw her finish fourth in the U/17 Girls Triple Jump. Eoghan Mitchell was the final athlete in action when his throw of 8.33m placed him in 10th overall.

It was great to see so many juveniles out representing the club during the indoors and competing at such a high level. A massive well done to all, and a special word of thanks to all the coaches involved in preparing our juveniles over the past number of months.

Laois Intermediate Road Championships Congrats to all club athletes who took part in the Laois Intermediate Road Championships held in Killeen on Sunday. St Abban’s hosted the event in the home of St Abban himself, with both the local school and housing estate named after the Saint.

On a beautiful day for racing Sarah Fleming was the only St Abban’s athlete in a small women’s field. Sarah took up the running from early on and led for the majority of the way only to be passed in the closing stages by Rebecca Condell of Ballyroan Abbeyleix & District AC.

The Men’s race saw a larger field assembled. Jack McMahon led the race from gun to tape to take victory in 19:36. The first St Abban’s athlete home was David McEvoy who finished just outside the medals in fourth place. Tom Kenny was next in sixth, followed by Stephen Lawler in ninth and Billy Ramsbottom in 10th. Conor Barry, Liam Byrne and James Nolan completed the team.

When the scores were added together St Abban’s finished in second place with 29 points, seven points behind Oughaval and just ahead of Ballyroan Abbeyleix & District on 34 points.

Many thanks to all the stewards who helped out and also to those who prepared tea and refreshments for those in attendance. The final race of the roads calendar, the Master’s will take place in Portarlington in three weeks’ time, hosted by St Michael’s AC.
