Last Chance to See ‘12’: A Powerful Exhibition on Addiction and Recovery at Dunamaise Arts Centre

12

The Dunamaise Arts Centre invites the public to experience the final days of '12', a compelling exhibition that delves into the themes of addiction and recovery. This thought-provoking showcase, which has been running since 19 January, will conclude on Saturday, 22 March.

Curated by Ciara Buckley and David Delaney, '12' brings together a diverse collection of portrait photography, artworks, personal narratives, and creative expressions. The exhibition sheds light on the lived experiences of individuals who have navigated addiction, families affected by substance misuse, and the broader community impacted by these challenges. Through various media, '12' aims to challenge stigma, spark conversation, and offer insight into the complexities of addiction.

A central feature of the exhibition is the display of twelve chairs from Cuan Mhuire Treatment Centre in Athy, Ireland's largest voluntary provider of addiction treatment services. These chairs, transformed through creative intervention, stand as testaments to resilience, hope, and the power of artistic expression in the recovery process.

The exhibition has been met with widespread acclaim, with attendees praising its depth and emotional resonance. The launch event, held on 7 February, featured compelling speeches from Michelle Robertson, co-founder of The ARC Project, and Grá Byrne, a counsellor with Cuan Mhuire, highlighting the importance of dialogue and creative expression in addressing addiction and recovery.

Supported by Creative Ireland Laois and Laois Arts Office, '12' is open to the public free of charge until 22 March. Visitors are encouraged to engage with the artwork in an immersive setting, reflecting on the societal and personal dimensions of addiction.
