GAA

Already into September, this used to be the weekend when there was a mad scramble for All-Ireland hurling final tickets, all that is in the past I andnstead we are looking forward to the county hurling quarter-finals. Last weekend was busy and exciting. On Thursday, the junior hurlers made the journey to Rosenallis on the 60th anniversary of the famed junior final. This time, Camross won on the pitch, but it proved fruitless as they needed to win by six points.

Sunday was a hectic day from morning to night. At midday, the U13 footballers took the field in Rathleague and from there it was Pairch Ui Mhorda for a 2pm throw-in when the seniors put their title on the line and in the end they were comfortable winners and earned a place in the quarter-final against the Harps on Sunday next at 3.45pm.

As the game came to a close, some Camross people headed to Rathleague for a second time, this time the junior camogie team were making their championship debut. They came up short, but I suppose two out of three ain’t bad ? in Portlaoise the score was 5-8 to 2-5. Come 6pm and game number four was underway, the premier intermediate against Clough-Ballacolla, with no win to their credit. Camross produced a great second half to claim victory 4-17 to 1-7 and as a result they are through to the quarter-final. Great credit must go to the players and management of the PIH team ? many of these lads were on the road before 1pm, heading to Portlaoise, then to Raheen without proper meals and then togged out. Well done to Gary Cuddy and company.

On Saturday next, they travel to Pairch Ui Mhorda to face Ballyfin. A long and busy day for players and officials. However, when you are winning it is easier.

Last Sunday, the U13 hurlers played the Harps in the semi-final at Derrynaseera and on Wednesday the U15 team was scheduled to play Portlaoise, also in a semi-final.
