Crucial points on offer as Portlaoise host New Ross

.

Portlaoise RFC return to Togher tomorrow afternoon knowing that victory over New Ross could provide a significant boost to their Leinster League Division 2A campaign.

After three rounds, Portlaoise sit sixth in the table with one win and two defeats, having recorded a home win against Roscrea but suffering losses to North Kildare and table-toppers Cill Dara.

New Ross arrive level on points with Portlaoise, having also won one of their opening three matches, making this an important contest for both sides as they seek to move away from the lower reaches of the table and keep contact with the promotion contenders.

While the league table may not yet be taking definitive shape, Sunday's clash already carries considerable significance. The winners will move towards mid-table security and gain valuable momentum heading into the next block of fixtures, while defeat would leave either side playing catch-up before the season reaches its halfway point.

Portlaoise will draw encouragement from their performance at Togher. Their 27-20 victory over Roscrea in Round 2 demonstrated the attacking potential within the squad, while home advantage has traditionally been a key factor for the Laois club.

The challenge for Portlaoise will be producing an 80-minute display. Against stronger opposition they have shown flashes of quality but have struggled at times to maintain consistency. Last week's defeat away to Cill Dara highlighted the standard required to challenge at the top end of Division 2A, but there were still positives that Portlaoise can take into this weekend's encounter.

New Ross, meanwhile, arrive having defeated Longford but having come up short against Cill Dara and Newbridge. The Wexford side have proven they are capable of picking up results and possess enough attacking threat to trouble any team in the division on their day.

For Portlaoise, the battle up front could prove decisive. Establishing dominance at scrum and lineout time would provide the platform to bring their backs into the game and apply scoreboard pressure. Equally important will be discipline, with tight contests often decided by whichever side concedes the fewest opportunities.

With both teams sitting on five points, there is little to separate them on paper. Home advantage may just tip the balance in Portlaoise's favour and, if they can reproduce the intensity shown in their victory over Roscrea, they will fancy their chances of collecting a valuable league win.
