A total of 42 people have died in our waters in 2025 so far.

That is 10 more lives lost since the same time last year, a 31.25 per cent increase.

On World Drowning Prevention Day, the Irish Coast Guard, the RNLI and Water Safety Ireland remember all those who have lost their lives in the water.

They have said they want people to enjoy the water, know the risks, plan and prepare, and look out for one another.

World Drowning Prevention Day takes place on Friday, July 25th.

Linda-Gene Byrne from the RNLI told Newstalk that this year's drowning statistics have risen.

"The last couple of years, we actually were seeing a downward trend in the drowning fatalities, but unfortunately, this year, in the last couple of months, we have seen that take a turn, and the number of incidents has increased, like you said, by 10 year on year," Ms Byrne said.

The groups advise people to always wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid and remember that children require constant supervision near water.

Linda-Gene Byrne from the RNLI told Newstalk that if you find yourself in difficulty in the water, Float to Live.

"Some simple tips that we, the organisations, have is really to plan, so if you’re going out, please check the weather and tides and see is there strong winds and what's the weather going to be like and remember that the water is still cold this time of the year," she said.

"If possible, go to a lifeguarded beach, if you’re going to a beach, try and use a lifeguarded beach and if you’re going for a swim, to never go alone, go accompanied."
