Gardaí seek public’s help after woman lost €8k after giving bank cards to 'fake' employee

On Monday's episode of Crimecall on RTÉ, gardaí are asking for help in a case of deception where a woman was convinced to hand over her bank cards to someone she believed was a bank employee.

In the days that followed, she discovered thousands of euros had been taken from her account.

In September 2025, a woman received a text message that appeared to be from her bank, asking her to confirm if a payment on her account was genuine.

When she replied no, she received a phone call from a person who claimed to be from her bank.

Garda Dylan Powell is investigating the case and explains to Crimecall how the woman was convinced to hand over her cards.

Over the next few days, CCTV cameras captured the cards being used multiple times in Dublin and Kildare.

For the first time, gardaí are releasing the footage of her cards being used to try to identify two separate men who were seen accessing her account.

One man was seen using one of the woman’s cards at ATMs in Tallaght, Ballyfermot, Dun Laoghaire, and the Naas Road in Dublin, as well as in Bray. Over the course of four days, he withdrew over €5,500.

While, separately, another man was caught on camera using one of the victim’s cards in shops in Naas, Swords, Fonthill, and Carrickmines, spending over €3000.
