Karol Ramsbottom’s kennel secured another notable success in the second round of the Irish Greyhound Derby

Prahub Sharman representing BOYLE Sports presents a trophy to Karol Ramsbottom after Sober Barry won Heat one Round Two of the 2026 BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby

FRESH from sending out two opening-round winners, the experienced trainer made an immediate impact in the second round when Sober Barry landed Heat 1 on Friday night with a determined display.

Owned by Sean Malone, the son of Skywalker Barry and Sober Pearl made full use of his trapping speed to take control of the contest from an early stage. After leading into the opening bend, Sober Barry faced strong late challenges from both Priceless Romeo and Bockos Gold but dug deep in the closing stages to prevail by a length in 29.42.

The victory ensured Ramsbottom maintained his strong presence in the Derby and highlighted the consistency of a kennel that continues to compete successfully against some of the strongest training operations in Ireland.

With the competition now reduced to the last 48 greyhounds, Ramsbottom will be hoping Sober Barry can continue his impressive progress in the weeks ahead as the race for Derby glory intensifies.

The second round saw several of the sport's biggest names shine, including Bockos Diamond, Bouncing Monarch and Wi Can James, but Ramsbottom's success ensured Laois was once again represented on one of the biggest stages in Irish greyhound racing.

As the Derby moves into its next phase at Shelbourne Park, Laois supporters will be keeping a close eye on Sober Barry's progress, with Ramsbottom's charge proving he has both the pace and determination required to remain a serious contender in the world's greatest greyhound race.

The action continues this Saturday, 22 August, with 48 greyhounds competing for a spot in the next round.
