VICTOR Conroy from Laois proudly represented Ireland alongside 23 fellow athletes at the European Transplant Games, held in Arnhem, Netherlands, from 21 to 28 June.
A double lung transplant recipient, Victor, from Clonad, has now participated in three Transplant Games and continues to approach each event with remarkable enthusiasm and determination. His commitment, sportsmanship and effort across a variety of disciplines have earned admiration from teammates and competitors alike.
This year, Victor competed in darts singles and trebles, as well as pétanque singles, and was also scheduled to take part in shot put and ten-pin bowling, showcasing his versatility across a wide range of sports.
Victor’s story is one of resilience and inspiration. As a member of Transplant Sport Ireland, he demonstrates that life after transplantation can be active, fulfilling and successful. His achievements serve as an encouragement not only to athletes but also to individuals and families facing significant health challenges.
Despite competition being limited to just two and a half days due to a red weather warning for extreme heat, the Irish team delivered an outstanding performance, claiming 28 medals in total — 16 gold, seven silver and five bronze.
However, for the athletes involved, the Games are about far more than medals. They represent a celebration of life, an opportunity to honour organ donors and a powerful showcase of the benefits of organ donation. Every athlete participating has overcome major medical challenges, making their presence on the international stage a remarkable achievement in itself.
For Victor, simply taking part is the greatest victory.
“Each day I wake up and take a breath, I’ve won. Taking part in the Games is the biggest achievement. Winning a medal is excellent motivation for fitness, health and a lovely memory to take home.
“If you lead with integrity and sportsmanship, enjoy the competition, camaraderie and have fun, that’s what really matters.” Through his determination and positive outlook, Victor continues to inspire others while celebrating the gift of life through sport.
