A man and a woman, both aged in their 70s, have died in a two-car crash in Co Louth.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following the fatal collision which occurred on the R173, The Bush, Co Louth on Thursday.

The collision involved two cars and occurred shortly before 3.10pm.

A male driver and female passenger, aged in their 70s, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Their bodies have been removed to Louth County Hospital where postmortem examinations will take place. A Garda family liaison officer has been appointed to support the family of the deceased.

The Coroner has been notified.

A male driver of the second car, aged in his 30s, and a female passenger, aged in her 30s, were airlifted to Beaumont Hospital and Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The road has since been reopened.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have been travelling on the R173 between Dundalk and Carlingford, Co Louth between 2.30pm and 3.30pm on Thursday.

Road users who may have camera footage (including dash cam or mobile phone recordings) are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí.
