Man and woman arrested after 'stinger device' deployed during pursuit of stolen car in Limerick

Gardai have charged two people after they allegedly stole a car and were pursued by gardaií who eventually stopped the stolen vehicle by deploying a stinger device in an attempt to blow out its tyres.

The blue-green coloured Toyota Corolla car, belonging to Fr Dick Browne, Cappamore, was stolen from beside his parochial house yesterday, Tuesday, August 25th.

Later on in the day gardai were alerted after a post appeared on the Cappamore Tidy Towns Facebook page, which stated: “Fr Browne’s car was stolen from outside his house this afternoon, please share this post with your Facebook friends, its a blue green Toyota Corolla.”

Gardaí pursued the stolen car through Limerick City on Tuesday afternoon, and eventually brought the car to a stop at Prospect, situated on the outskirts of the city center.

Videos of the garda pursuit of the stolen car were shared on social media.

A garda spokesman said: “Gardaí in Limerick have arrested two people following a managed containment operation in Limerick City.”

“On the evening of Tuesday 25th August 2026, a vehicle failed to stop when directed to do so by Gardaí.”

“The vehicle fled the scene and subsequently came to a stop in Prospect, Limerick, at approximately 6.35pm. A stinger device had been placed across the road.”

“A man and woman aged in their 30’s were arrested at the scene. They are scheduled to appear before the courts at a later date.”

“The recovered vehicle had earlier that day been subject to an unauthorised taking.”

“Investigations ongoing. As this is now before the courts, we will not be commenting further,” concluded the garda spokesman.
