Celebrated Portrait Artist to deliver Laois Adult Summer Artist Programme
The artist Salvatore of Lucan
CELEBRATED portrait artist Salvatore of Lucan is set to deliver the 2026 Adult Summer Artist Programme in Stradbally; the four-day programme will run from 16-19 June in the Malthouse, Stradbally.
Limited to 18 participants, the course is centred around the concept of ‘composing a double portrait,’ where Salvatore will bring the participants on a journey through composition and painting techniques across different media.
Salvatore of Lucan is a contemporary Irish artist whose work focuses on the surreal, often delving into a diary he keeps that chronicles his own life to inspire new works. Born Salvatore Fullam, he adopted the moniker to honour his hometown of Lucan, Dublin, while also giving a nod to the tradition of Renaissance masters. His work is characterised by a ‘magical realist’ approach, where ordinary domestic scenes are infused with a sense of the uncanny, psychological depth and imbued with vibrant, saturated colour.
Salvatore is perhaps most celebrated for his portraiture, which explores the complexities of identity, heritage and family.
He is the winner of the prestigious Zurich Portrait Prize and recently received a National Gallery commission for his portrait of Irish football legend Paul McGrath.
The cost is €130, with four concession places of €80 available; two places for job seekers/unwaged participants and two for recent third-level graduates.
To book, contact Laois Arts Council at arts@laoiscoco.ie.
Each participant is required to have their own materials.
