Councillors call for pedestrian crossing lights to be fixed in Portlaoise

A new component is to be installed to resolve the ongoing issue with the pedestrian crossing lights at Portlaoise College.
DUE to recurring technical issues with the pedestrian crossing lights at Portlaoise College a new component will be installed to resolve the ongoing issue.
That was the repose given to cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley when she asked for an update as to when the issues with the lights would be resolved.
Cllr Dwane Stanley said that there are up to 1,000 students attending the college as well as residents along the Mountrath Road, Rockdale, Rockview Ardán Glas and in Bellingham who use the pedestrian crossing.
Speaking at the February meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District Council she said the issue with the pedestrian crossing lights: “Just seems to be going on forever. Can we have some idea when the lights will be fixed? The response to my question doesn’t tell us that.”
The council’s senior executive engineer Wes Wilkinson said that he would get the date from the road design section and inform her.
Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald said: “There’s a huge pedestrian population in that area of the town. I first reported the issue with the lights on 15 January and now nearly two months later the problem is still there. We’re encouraging people to walk to school. But this is taking too long to fix.”
