Driver sent for trial over death of Mountrath student

Adam Kirwan (20) died in a fatal collision in Thurles in March 2023
A young man charged in relation to the death of college student Adam Kirwan has been sent forward for trial.
A book of evidence was served last week on Seán Fitzpatrick (21) of Killpurcell, Ballybrophy, Co Laois, who is charged with dangerous driving causing Adam’s death at College Green, Monakeeba, Thurles on 2 March 2023.
From Derrough, Mountrath, Adam (20) was a first year student at Mary Immaculate College (MIC) in Thurles at the time of the fatal collision.
Mr Fitzpatrick was returned for trial to the next sittings of Nenagh Circuit Criminal Court, after the book of evidence was served at Thurles District Court on Tuesday 3 September.
The circuit court sittings are due to open on 8 October. The defendant was granted legal aid and was remanded on continuing bail in the meantime.
Mr Fitzpatrick was charged and made his first appearance at Thurles District Court last April, when the case was adjourned for two months. The prosecution was granted a further three-month adjournment last June, after the district court heard that a book of evidence was not yet complete.
A past pupil of Gaelscoil Thromaire and Mountrath Community School, Adam was on the Laois minor hurling team in 2018 and 2019 and played with the U/20 team for three years.
An extremely popular player and friend, he was a star forward with Trumera and played a key role in the club’s 2021 intermediate hurling title win.
He is deeply missed by his heartbroken parents Lourda and Paul, sister Marie, grandparents Timmy and Mary Kirwan and Pat and Breda Hosey, extended family and a large circle of friends.
