FOLLOWING the defeat of Laois by Dublin on a scoreline of 4-14 to 1-17 in the first round of the O’Byrne Cup, a Dublin fan got himself into a bit of bother with gardaí in Portlaoise and had to be arrested.
Portlaoise District Court heard that gardaí came across the 42-year-old in a highly intoxicated state early on Sunday morning, 4 January. He was unsteady on his feet and when they tried talking with him, he became abusive towards them and had to be arrested.
Defending solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said: “It was on Saturday/early Sunday morning. Dublin was playing in a match and he had come to support them.”
She explained: “He hadn’t eaten all day. He had left a public house and went to go back in to collect his coat when he was stopped from entering. It was he who contacted the gardaí to tell them that he couldn’t get his coat back.”
Ms Fitzpatrick said that her client Robert McMahon from 24 Kinvara Park, Navan Road, Dublin 7, who works in network security, was pleading guilty to being intoxicated and to engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour at Market Square, Portlaoise on 4 January.
Judge Susan Fay applied the Probation Act, after Mr McMahon agreed to donate €150 to the court poor box to avoid a conviction.
