A MOTORIST who verbally abused gardaí when they stopped her was convicted of a public order offence when she came before Portlaoise District Court last week.
On 21 September 2022 gardaí pulled over a car along the Dublin Road in Portlaoise that was being driven by Mary Ellen Carthy from 12 Farrencooley Crescent, Bishopsland, Kildare after they detected that the tax on it had expired.
While gardaí were seizing the vehicle Ms Carthy became abusive towards them saying “they are only pigs” as she spoke to someone on the phone, and said, “may ye drop dead”.
Sgt Kirby said the woman had 54 previous convictions, 19 of which were for road traffic offences.
Defending solicitor Michael Byrne said his 28-year-old client had been attending Portlaoise hospital at the time of the incident and explained that she was extremely stressed, at the end of her tether and feeling unwell.
He said that Ms Carthy had instructed him to apologise on her behalf to both gardaí who she abused on the night and was very sorry for what happened.
The defendant was convicted and fined €450.00.
