LAOIS Co Council should install additional bins at areas of heavy footfall throughout the county in order to better promote cleaner roads and provide greater convenience for walkers, the latest meeting of Portlaoise municipal district heard.

Portlaoise Cllr Tommy Mulligan brought forward the proposal, motivated by a desire to combat persistent issues of public dumping which have in part been caused by a lack of public infrastructure that allows people to deposit. their litter without having to lug it for miles.

The official response from the area office was: "The street bin service in Portlaoise has been expanding incrementally in recent years. There are now 59 solar compactor bins in operation in Portlaoise town. The Portlaoise MD office will engage with Cllr Mulligan to examine the proposed locations for additional street bins. These locations will be noted and referenced at the time, if or when additional funding becomes available to enable further expansion of the services."

Cllr Mulligan expressed his gratitude for the response and highlighted what he deemed the great work done by the council and Portlaoise tidy towns committee. He underscored that, thanks in part to the terrific condition that so many roads are in, many people are using the routes for walks and runs in increasing number and requested extra bins along said routes.

The councillor said: "Just a simple thing. People just find it an inconvenience having to carry rubbish home, carrying it a considerable amount of time and, look, I think, bins, it's always good to encourage responsibility and good habits."
