A MAN informed a district court judge in Portlaoise last week that he couldn’t attend court because he was currently in Tenerife.

After being assured that the legal requirements regarding the service of the summons had been met, Judge Andrew Cody said the case should proceed in the absence of the defendant Craig Lee (28), Rock Road, Borris-in-Ossory.

He had been summoned before the court for driving without insurance or a driving licence at Rock Road, Borris-in-Ossory on 9 July last year.

Garda Stephen O’Hanlon said the defendant had no previous convictions and that fixed charge penalty notices were issued for the offences but were not paid.

Judge Cody convicted Mr Lee of driving while uninsured, fined him €750 and disqualified him from driving for two years. He also fined the defendant €500 for driving without a driving licence.
