Defending barrister Andrew Dunne said that his client Michael Buckingham (32), Gracefield, Portarlington was pleading guilty to the theft of a vodka premixed drink to the value of €8.30 from Tesco Extra, James Fintan Lalor Avenue, Portlaoise on 30 May.

Sgt Kirby said the defendant was highly intoxicated and was arrested. While being held, gardaí found there was a bench warrant in existence and he was remanded in custody.

He said the stolen item was recovered in a resaleable state.

Mr Dunne said that while Mr Buckingham “is a nice gentleman, he has addiction difficulties. He has received residential treatment and had been doing quite well but relapsed a couple of weeks ago.” Judge Susan Fay convicted the defendant of the offence and imposed a one-month sentence backdated to 31 May.
