Laois murder accused again remanded in custody

THE case of a manâ¯accused of murdering his wife in Portlaoise again came before the local district court on Thursday last.
Despite technical difficulties in the courtroom, the case commenced via video link from Cloverhill Remand Prison.
Eugen Constantinâ¯(72), 25 Church Street, Portlaoise is charged with the murder of his wife Adina Raluca Constantinâ¯at their home on Sunday 5 July and has been held on remand since then.
At last week’s sitting of the case, Judge Andrew Cody told Mr Constantin that while he could be seen on the monitor in the courtroom, he could not be heard, but that he could see and hear the court.
Garda Sgt Kirby said that he expected a book of evidence to be ready to be served on the accused in a month’s time.
Defending solicitor Philip Meagher said that his client had been admitted to bail by the High Court but was unable to take that up due to financial circumstances and was consenting to being remanded in custody for the service of a book of evidence.
Judge Andrew Cody remanded Mr Constantin in custody with consent to bail until 28 September when the case will again be conducted via video link and when the book of evidence is ready to be served, informing him that he will be brought before the court.
