Laois man stole Capri Sun and water
The Portlaoise man pleaded guilty to the theft of a €2.60 bottle of water and a €2 Capri Sun Drink.
A LOCAL man pleaded guilty to the theft of a bottle of water and a Capri Sun drink when he came before Portlaoise District Court last week Garda Sergeant Mark Daly said that Wayne O’Donoghue from 7 Old Knockmay Road, Portlaoise took a €2.60 bottle of water and a €2 Capri Sun drink from Portlaoise Plaza, Togher, Portlaoise on 22 March this year. When approached by staff, he refused to pay for the items.
The 24-year-old had 33 previous convictions, of which nine were for thefts.
Judge Andrew Cody said: “He’s now facing six months for his water and Capri Sun.” Defending barrister Andrew Dunne said that, for a long time, his client had remained sober but at the time he had “relapsed into unhealthy and dangerous habits”.
He said Mr O’Donoghue is beginning community service in a couple of weeks, currently signing on three times weekly at the local garda station, engaging with the probation services and abiding by all the bail conditions that had been imposed.
Mr Dunne said the defendant had brought €20 to court to pay for the goods he stole.
“He is a menace,” said Judge Cody. “I see his mam is helping him to get back on track. Will he have €50 with him next week? If he donates €50 to the Saint Vincent de Paul, I will strike out the charge.” Mr O’Donoghue was remanded on continuing bail to the 14 May sitting of the court.
