A LOCAL stonemason was banned from driving for two years after pleading guilty to dangerous driving when he appeared before last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

Judge Andrew Cody was told that at 8.30pm on 5 April, Calem Lacey (24), Oakglen, Stradbally was detected driving his Lexus car at a speed of 191km on the M7 at Cappakeel, which is a 120km/ph speed zone.

Defending solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client, who works as a stone mason, “is very well thought of. It will have consequences for him if he is disqualified from driving. He is also handing in a very good character reference from his employer. He strikes me as a very decent young man who is highly thought of.” Judge Cody convicted Mr Lacey of the offence fined him €500 and disqualified him from driving for two years.
