A WOMAN who phoned gardaí seeking their assistance ended up in Portlaoise District Court last week on a charge of being intoxicated in a public place.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby told the court that at 11pm on the night of 5 August, Tracy McKevitt from Apartment 8 De Vesci Court, Fairgreen, Portlaoise phoned gardaí looking for help.

“It was a cry for help,” he said.

However, when a medical crew arrived on site, said the sergeant, it was found that she was extremely drunk.

Defending solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said that 40-year-old Ms McKevitt has had difficulties with alcohol for a while. He said that she has been trying to get a residential placement in Cuan Mhuire to deal with her alcohol problems.

Remanding the defendant on continuing bail to 16 March, Judge Susan Fay instructed that she takes part in the Athy Alternative Programme to deal with her alcohol problem.
