Man with no insurance or licence drove to Laois to buy gifts

Portlaoise District Court
A SOLICITOR for a man who had travelled to Laois from Kildare to purchase a gift for his girlfriend told Judge Andrew Cody the reason why he had travelled so far was because: “You can get better gifts in Laois.” The boast came from Portlaoise based solicitor Barry Fitzgerald who was representing 30-year-old Christian Doerfer from Walterstown, Nurney, Kildare.
Mr Doerfer was summoned before Portlaoise District Court last week for driving while uninsured and without a driving licence at Cappakeel, Portlaoise on 18 March, to which he pleaded guilty to.
The court heard that fixed charged penalty noticed had been issued to the defendant at the time of the stop but that he had failed to pay the fines. It was also told that Mr Doerfer had two previous convictions for driving while uninsured.
Mr Fitzgerald said his client is an unemployed factory worker who at the time was having difficulties with his partner in their relationship and had driven to buy her a gift.
“He went a long way from home to get her a gift, “noted Judge Cody, to which Mr Fitzgerald replied, “You can get better gifts in Laois.” Judge Cody went on to convict Mr Doerfer of driving while uninsured, fined him €500 and disqualified him from driving for four years. The other summons of driving without a licence was taken into consideration
