A WOMAN who had pleaded guilty to not having her dog under control when it bit two women had her case adjourned at last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

Roxanne Cawley (32) had been living at Derrycloney, Mountmellick on 14 March and on 29 March last year when her Pit Bull Terrier bit two women.

The court had heard that on both occasions the women had been out jogging and passing the defendant’s house when they were attacked and bitten by the dog on the lower part of their legs. On the 29 March attack, one of the women had to flag down a passing motorist to escape from the dog.

Judge Susan Fay had ordered Ms Cawley to engage with the Restorative Justice Programme, who had instructed her to have €200 with her in court to compensate the injured parties.

When the case resumed last week, solicitor for the defendant Josephine Fitzpatrick said it was a very positive report from the Restorative Justice Programme, which had instructed her client to pay €200, “but she only has €100 in court.”

She went on to ask Judge Fay to allow additional time for her client to gather up the remaining €100, which the judge agreed to and adjourned the case to 8 June.
