Portlaoise Court: Crashed motorbike into one-day-old new car

A MOTORCYCLIST who crashed his bike into a brand-new car that was bought just the day before was convicted of careless driving at Portlaoise District Court.
Tom Davis (22), Glenbrook, Wicklow town, Co Wicklow was initially summoned for dangerous driving at Slatt Lower, Wolfhill on 29 July last year.
Solicitor for the defendant Dermot Hickey asked that the summons be reduced to careless driving.
Judge Edward Carroll said he would consider the request after hearing the details in the case and if gardaí agreed to reducing it.
Outlining the incident, Garda Sgt Kirby said that at 5.20pm that evening, Mr Davis was riding his motorbike with a female passenger on the back. He veered over the white centre line and onto the wrong side of the road, where collided with an on-coming car.
He said both Mr Davis and his passenger sustained broken bone injuries and had to be taken to hospital.
“Both made full recoveries, but there was a good bit of damage done to the car that had been bought just the day before,” said Sgt Kirby.
He said the driver of the car was unhurt and that the state would accept reducing the summons to careless driving.
Mr Hickey said that his client has no previous convictions and was fully insured and all the damage that was caused was covered.
He said that Mr Davis had previously ridden a 450cc motorbike and had upgraded it to a 750cc just months before the incident and “as he has said himself, he was probably not able for it.” Mr Hickey said that Mr Davis: “Comes from a very well-respected family in Wicklow town.” Judge Carroll said he was satisfied to reduce a summons of careless driving, which he convicted Mr Davis of, and fined him €400.
