Portlaoise Court: Drunk man arrested for his own safety in local housing estate

WHEN gardaí responded to a report of a disturbance in a housing estate in Portlaoise they came across a 28-year-old man in such an intoxicated state that they had to arrest him for his own safety.
That was the evidence given at Portlaoise District Court when David Condon from Apartment 4, Sophia Housing, Tullamore pleaded guilty to being intoxicated at Clonrooske View, Portlaoise at 4.30am on the morning of 6 September.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant had 89 previous convictions, the last being on 3 July last year.
Defending solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said that his client just had more alcohol than he should have had on the occasion.
He explained: “He’s doing well after a long struggle with heroin addiction. He’s engaging with the Community Alcohol and Drug Services (CADS). This offence is a step down from his previous offending.”
Judge Susan Fay adjourned the case to 15 December and told the defendant if he has a letter from CAD about his engagement on that day, she would “take that into consideration which will be reflected in the penalty.”
