Portlaoise Court: Fines went unpaid for six-years

A MAN who was fined €750 six years ago was brought before Portlaoise District Court on a bench warrant for non-payment of the fines.

Aaron Hennessy, Garron, Ballybrophy had the fines imposed on 18 February 2019 for motoring of fences.

The court was told that since then, he moved and has an address now at 9 Canal Close, Longford.

Judge Andrew Cody noted that since 2019, two bench warrants had been issued for Mr Hennessy’s arrest.

Defending solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said that her client had moved and had not received the fines.

She said Mr Hennessy is a fulltime carer and works part-time in a pizza outlet.

She said the fines were not paid because her client has three children and “every penny into the house goes on his family”.

She said she was applying for free legal aid for her client.

Judge Cody said he was refusing free legal aid until Mr Hennessy provides bank statements for the two months prior to last week’s court sitting and remanded him on continuing bail to the 6 February sitting of the court.
