Portlaoise Court: Gardaí return €7.50 to Laois man

A PORTLAOISE inmate who is due for release from prison next May was given a two-month suspended sentence when he was brought before a recent sitting of the local district court.

PJ O’Shea, 20 O’Moore Place, Portlaoise pleaded guilty to the possession of cannabis at Portlaoise Garda Station, being intoxicated in a public place and threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour at New Park, Portlaoise on 15 May.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said that gardaí came across the defendant in the New Park housing estate at 12.40am he because aggressive towards them. 

When arrested and searched at the gardaí station, a small quality of cannabis was found in his possession.

Defence solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said the offences occurred “during a period of a splattering of offences. He is now serving a significant sentence, probably the most significant he has spent in custody”.

Sgt. Kirby said that at the previous week’s sitting of the court, a court order had been made to return €7.50 to Mr O’Shea, which gardaí had compiled with.

Judge Cody convicted the defendant of engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour and sentenced him to two months, which he suspended for two years and took the other two offences into consideration.
