A MAN was jailed for two months for stealing €248 worth of office equipment from Tesco, Laois Shopping Centre, Portlaoise when he came before the local district court last week.

Fionan Lawlor, 42 Cormack Drive, Nenagh, Co Tipperary pleaded guilty to the offence, which took place on 31 July last year.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant was stopped leaving the shop by security staff and that Mr Lawlor had 100 previous convictions.

Defence solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said that his client “has been in the judicial system since the age of 16”.

He said Mr Lawlor has difficulties with drug use and on the day “was on a cocktail of street tablets. He didn’t know what he was doing at the time because he was completely zonked out”.

Judge Andrew Cody asked if the goods were recovered, to which Mr Lawlor replied: “They were recovered when I was going out of the shop.”

Judge Cody said that given the defendant’s number of previous offences he was convicting him of the offence and sentenced him to two months in prison.
