Portlaoise Court: Motorist (75) collided with ready-mix lorry

Portloaise Courthouse

A MOTORIST who lost concentration while driving and collided with a ready-mix lorry was summoned before Portlaoise District Court for careless driving.

William Gill, Kilcooney, Geashill, Co Offaly pleaded guilty to the offence, which took place on 6 July 2023 at Cloneygown, Co Offaly.

The court was told that at 3pm on the day in question, gardaí were called to a road traffic collision involving two vehicles.

When they arrived at the scene, they saw that a car had collided with a lorry.

While the lorry driver sustained no injuries, Mr Gill's solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said that her client’s hand was broken during the collision.

She said that Mr Gill lost concentration while driving around a bend and collided with the lorry.

She said that her 75-year-old client is a retired farmer who lives in an isolated part of the countryside and was hoping he doesn’t receive a disqualification so that he can continue to drive.

Judge Andrew Cody convicted Mr Gill of the offence and fined him €300.
