Portlaoise Court: Ordered to sell van to compensate householders he conned in Laois

A MAN whose van is valued between €3,000 and €4,000 was told by Judge Susan Fay to sell it and to bring €2,050 the next time he comes to court to pay compensation for taking deposits for work he failed to carry out.

A previous sitting of the case at Portlaoise District Court heard how 33-year-old Patrick Kenneally with an address at 7 Leonard's Court, Dunnamaggin, Co Kilkenny took deposits from two householders in Castlefleming, Errill on 8 November 2021 and 29 September 2022. Mr Kenneally was to return to install doors in their homes, but failed to deliver on his promise.

Last September, he pleaded guilty to two counts of deception and was ordered to undergo a probation report and to repay the victims of his crimes.

When the case returned to court last week, solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said that Mr Kenneally did not have the money with him.

Mr Fitzgerald said: “He knows he should have had something (money) for the court, but says he’s doing well with the Probation Service. He’s asking to adjourn the case to give him time to raise the money. He is medically unfit to take part in community service.”

Judge Susan Fay asked if Mr Kenneally owned a vehicle?

Replying Mr Fitzgerald said: “He has a van worth about €3,000 or €4,000”, before again asked Judge Fay to give his client more time to raise the compensation.

“I'll give him until 9 June. I want that money in court. You have a van and it can be sold, but I want that money in court that day, warned Judge Fay.
