A TEENAGER pleaded guilty to stealing over €900 worth of perfume from Shaws department store when he appeared before Carlow District Court last week. John O’Brien (19) pleaded guilty to counts of theft on 13 and 14 August last year from Shaws, Tullow Street, Carlow.

Sergeant Hud Kelly told the court that Mr O’Brien stole €279 worth of perfume on the first date and a further €628 worth the following day, amounting to €907 worth of goods over the two days. Sgt Kelly also told Judge Geraldine Carthy that Mr O’Brien was also charged with taking two bottles of vodka from Aldi, Graiguecullen on 29 April this year.

Solicitor Alex Rafter told the court that Mr O’Brien was “very pleasant to deal with but gets himself in a little bit of trouble”, to which Judge Carthy replied that Mr Rafter “couldn’t call €907 worth of perfume a little bit of trouble”.

Mr Rafter said that his client came from a “troubled background” and asked the judge to consider giving him a chance with the Probation Service. The judge obliged and adjourned the matter until 23 July.
