Drink driver in Laois caught speeding on Slow Down Day

The van was pulled in by gardaí at dawn on Slow Down Day

A DRINK driver was caught speeding in Laois just before dawn on national Slow Down Day today.

The culprit was arrested by the Laois Roads Policing Unit and court proceedings have begun.

The driver was pulled in by gardaí at 7.20am, after a radar speed check recorded the van travelling at 78kph in a 50kph zone.

After failing a roadside breath test, the driver was arrested for drink driving and was brought to a garda station to give a sample.

Posting a photo from the scene (above) on social media, gardaí said that court proceedings have commenced against the driver.

Gardaí commented that the driver was arrested 'just 20 minutes into National Slow Down Day'. However, this time the road safety campaign began at midnight and will continue until 23:59 tonight. The day usually runs from 7am until 7am the following morning. 

Up to 5pm today, a total of 484 vehicles nationwide were caught travelling above the speed limits.

According to garda figures, examples of high speeds detected included 105kph in a 60kph zone on the Freshford Road in Kilkenny and 70kph in a 50kph zone on Main Street in Urlingford, Co Kilkenny.
