Elderly woman’s fall in Laois village prompts appeal for footpath repairs

The woman was on her way to Mass at St Manman's Church in Clonaslee when she fell on a broken footpath in Chapel Street

AN appeal has been made for urgent footpath repairs in a Laois village, after an elderly woman tripped and fell on her way to Mass.

The incident in Clonaslee was highlighted at a council meeting by Cllr Seamus McDonald, who said the broken footpath on Chapel Street is in “very dangerous” condition.

“An aged woman slipped and fell there going to Mass a few weeks ago. Repairs need to be done as soon as possible,” he told the December meeting of Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District.

Cllr McDonald proposed ‘that Laois County Council repair the footpath at Frankie McRedmond’s house, Chapel Street, Clonaslee as it is very dangerous’.

Senior engineer Rory O’Callaghan replied that footpath repairs would be carried out at the site in the first quarter of 2025.

Cllr McDonald also asked for repairs on the old road at Castlecuffe, Clonaslee, near Seamus Rosney’s house.

The engineer confirmed that the council would “repair and patch” this section of the old R-422 road in Castlecuffe.
