Five Laois schools get climate action grants

Heywood CS in Ballinakill was approved for science laboratory refurbishment under the scheme

FIVE Laois schools will receive grants for climate action works as part of a funding scheme announced today.

Three primary schools and two secondary schools in the county will receive the grants, under the Climate Action Summer Works Scheme.

Heywood CS in Ballinakill is one of only 60 secondary schools nationwide approved for science laboratory refurbishment, under the summer 2026 programme.

The local primary schools awarded grants are Sandy Lane NS in Portarlington, Killenard NS and St Colman's NS in Stradbally.

The secondary schools are Clonaslee College (fabric defects) and Heywood CS (climate action and science lab refurbishment).

Schools can use the funding for a variety of projects such as installation of LED lighting, insulation upgrades, EV chargers, bike rack facilities and other climate-focused works and regular maintenance. There are also grants for refurbishment of science labs in secondary schools.

Previously known as the Summer Works Scheme, the programme provides funding for small-scale building works, with a strong emphasis on sustainability.

Welcoming the funding today, Laois TD Seán Fleming (FF) complimented the schools on their ‘excellent applications’ for environmental and maintenance works, to be carried out in their schools during the next summer holiday.

The grants are part of a €90m package for 297 projects across the country, under the Climate Action Summer Works Scheme.

A major element is the modernisation of science laboratories in 60 secondary schools, including Heywood CS, which all prioritised laboratory refurbishment in their applications. One-third of total funding, at €30m, is ring-fenced for refurbishment of science labs.
