Four Laois areas to share almost €310,000

The playground in Rathdowney will get €95,000

FOUR community projects in Laois will share almost €310,000 in funding announced this week.

A primary school and a playground are among the projects that will share €308,465 to support rural regeneration and local communities.

The biggest slice of funding at €95,000 will go towards an upgrade of the community playground and multi-use games area (MUGA) in Rathdowney, which is operated by Laois County Council and located in the grounds of St Fergal’s College.

St Colman's NS in Stradbally will receive €80,000 for parking and outdoor toilet facilities, while Emo/Rath Athletics Club will get €82,260 for tartan sprint lanes.

The remainder of funding at €51,205 will go to Laois Partnership Company for the purchase of a mini bus/community vehicle.

The grants will help to provide or upgrade community, sports, parks and other facilities in the four areas.

Welcoming the grants announced on 24 February, local TD Seán Fleming thanked the community groups and volunteers involved ‘for their efforts to make their communities a better place and to acknowledge the pride they have shown in their areas’.

He said: ‘I wish the groups in Rathdowney, Emo Stradbally and Portlaoise every success with their projects. I look forward to ensuring the funds are used for the full benefit of the local communities and the various projects are completed as soon as possible.’
